After hiking two 14ers last year, I thought I was high time to get back in the saddle this summer. Storms have been picking up, so I knew it would be a challenge, but decided to give it a go anyway.
The mountain of choice was La Plata. Just outside Buena Vista, toward Leadville, this was another area I had yet to explore. After getting to town on Saturday AM, I dropped Travis off at the Monarch trailhead so that he could hit Monarch Crest Trail. I took the pups for a little river time and then swung up to Elevation Brewery for a drink and to make a game plan.
We decided to sleep at the trailhead and then hit La Plata EARLY the Sunday AM. That would have been a great plan if it wasn’t for the late night disruption. Gotta love an adult man blasting hard rock at all hours of the night. Classic. Either way, we slept a little later and got a late start on the trail.
After getting started on our hike, we slowly came to the conclusion that we wouldn’t be summiting. With weather rolling in and someone being slightly spent from an earlier 30+ mile bike ride (not myself obviously)
, it just wasn’t meant to be. Either way, we had a great hike, enjoyed being outdoors and were lucky enough to make it back to the car by the time the rain came down.
